Ashwood has appeared frequently on television networks as the leading spokesman for the world's pilots. In April of 1986, he was himself the target of Libyan-sponsored terrorists in London and was guarded by Scotland Yard. He has lectured to members of the CIA and the FBI on the psychology of the terrorist hijackers and has been personally involved in the investigation of numerous infamous hijacking and sabotage attempts against civilian airliners. Once a fighter pilot for Australia and England, he has been a captain for a major American airline for many years and has most recently served as First Vice President, Air Line Pilot's Association.
